In October, the Church Office had the joy of welcoming Melissa, a MGS student who joined us for a week as part of her school internship programme. She reflects on what she experienced and learned during her time with us. Her reflections are shared below.

In October, I had the opportunity to be attached to CCMC for a week, experiencing life inside the church office and being part of ministry beyond Sunday Services for the first time, opening my eyes to many new experiences.

Throughout the week, I took part in many meaningful activities such as doing research for a prayer for the world, helping to take photos and videos during Tuesday evening’s prayer service and visiting homebound members of the church.

The experience that I thought was most memorable was joining Pastor Rufus, Annie and Sok Chan to visit the homes of elderly or church members who are unable to attend church. In each visit, we would pray, sing, share communion and spend time listening to their stories and encouraging them. The sight of genuine happiness on their faces as they worshipped and prayed touched me.

Despite having struggles such as poor eyesight, hearing and mobility, they had still tried their best to sing and follow along as best as they could, even though it was really hard for them. Their determination and perseverance to worship although they had such challenges has moved and inspired me deeply.

Through these visits, I realised that homebound visitations are not just a small-scale church service at the homebound members’ houses, but instead, acts of care and love that helps them feel more connected to the church community even if they cannot be at the church physically. I have also learnt that sometimes, being present for people might have a great positive impact.

Another part of my experience is helping out at the church office, taking photos and videos at a church prayer service and doing research on prayer topics such as world crises or issues and persecuted Christians for a prayer in the service. Through this, I have learnt that there is actually a lot more effort put into prayer than I thought, before I experienced this.

Through this valuable experience, I have learnt the importance of showing care and concern for those who may feel left out, as even the small act of being there, offering a listening ear or a prayer can mean a lot. This experience deepened my understanding that serving God is not about doing something grand, but about showing His compassion wherever we are.
