Happy Together at Good Time Oldies

Do you remember the songs from your youth? Does hearing a familiar tune bring back fond memories of your younger days?
There was plenty of that warmth at our “Good Time Oldies” event on Saturday 26 September. Wesley Hall came alive with singing, clapping and dancing as 60 seniors gathered to enjoy the music of yesteryear. Watching everyone join in so enthusiastically, I caught what I can only describe as flashes of youth, as participants let their hair down and enjoyed themselves.
Jointly organised by the Glowing Years Ministry (GYM) and the Witness & Evangelism Ministry (W&E), the event had a simple purpose: to bring our seniors together for fellowship and create an opportunity to reach out to new friends through music. Familiar songs offered a welcoming way for people to come together, have fun and enjoy one another’s company.
Bringing the Oldies to Life

Having a live band added something special. There was room for interaction between the musicians and those gathered, with everyone encouraged to sing along and join in.
Leading the band on vocals and keyboards was Joseph Lim, our Lay Ministry Staff, who also led the coordination of the event. Joining him were Roger on vocals, Alex on guitar, Ming Ying on bass, and Sylvia, a young adult, on drums. It was an inter-generational band bringing familiar favourites to life, showing how music can bring people of different ages together.
The repertoire included evergreen favourites such as Paul Anka’s Diana, a medley of songs by The Beatles - classics like “She Loves You”, and “I Saw Her Standing There”.
These were songs that many participants had grown up with, and their enthusiastic singing and dancing showed just how much they still enjoyed them.
“Hearing old songs I had enjoyed singing when I was much younger brought back so many happy memories!” shared Joy Yeo, Chairperson of our Witness & Evangelism Ministry.
Faith Through the Battles

One particularly moving moment came after the song “Yesterday”, when Joseph shared his personal testimony. He spoke about his journey with the Lord and the church community as he battled cancer, and how holding on to his faith helped him find peace through the challenges he was facing. Indeed, how great a God we worship, who walks with us through every battle we face!
Joseph’s sharing reminded us that even when our circumstances are difficult and uncertain, we can find peace in knowing that we do not face them alone. His sharing brought an expression of faith into the morning’s programme. Amid the music and enjoyment, we heard how much it meant to him to have the Lord with him through a difficult season of life.
On Our Feet
Participants putting their best foot forward for Line Dancing!
In addition to the lively music, there was also plenty of opportunity to get on our feet. Line dancing has long been a popular activity among our seniors, with weekly sessions supported by GYM. For this event, line dancers joined in with the band, pairing familiar oldies to catchy dance steps. With music, dancing and a fellowship lunch to follow, there was much to enjoy together.
Kee Ang, who led the line dancing, shared: “Such a joy to lead the line dancing when so many stepped forward to join in! Did you not feel God’s blessing as we moved in unison, even if not perfectly yet?”
Participant Phyllis Wong reflected: “That Saturday, we time-travelled through songs, singing and dancing.
“On hearing the first notes of ‘Top of the World’, involuntarily I stood up, finishing the song with, ‘Jesus, your love’s put me at the top of the world.’
“Remembering the songs I grew up with, I see God’s cover over me.”
Remembering The Buildings of Yesteryear

We also had a guessing game featuring pictures of iconic places from Singapore’s past, many of which are no longer around. Participants tried to identify the locations as the pictures appeared on screen.
Giving Thanks Together
“Good Time Oldies” brought together music, faith and fellowship in a welcoming setting. We sang “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” during the programme and ended the morning with “Goodness of God”. These songs were a gentle reminder that, amid the fun and familiar tunes, we were also worshipping the Lord together.
It was a time to give thanks for His goodness and enjoy fellowship with one another. Whether we have known the Lord for many years or are just beginning to get to know Him, we can find encouragement in sharing this time together.
